ACER Notebooks My Preferred Brand Of Computers

ACER notebooks my preferred brand of computers, since they are Linux friendly.

For more than one reasons, first off the notebooks aren't in general overpriced, second the performance is quite ok, depending on how much you want or can spend on a computer.

Their warranty is excellent and I must say quality is equally as good.

I still have an Aspire notebook I purchased in 2011 and I have only had to replace the screen a couple of months ago.

Naturally the battery went dead after 3 years, but it is still 2 more than expected.

NOTE: If you need hardware support and are living in Brazil or just visiting.

You will only find "Assistência Técnica da Acer no São Paulo. Centro de Reparos da Acer, na cidade de Barueri, em SP."

ACER notebooks my preferred brand of computers.

An new battery with 6-cell costs around $120 BRL, but it will only work for about two hours, maybee 2,5 hours.

Now, I paid less than $2000 BRL for it brand new, with 128GB OCZ SSD, 4GB and iCore7 CPU, USB 3.0 and looking here in Brazil I can't find anything that matches this "eight year old", notebook to match it, both in price and performance.

It was a Windows7 Home Premium ACER notebook, but now it is a Debian 10 "Buster" notebook.

So here is the list of tested ACER computers:

Note: These are all former Windows7 notebooks unless stated otherwise.

  • ACER Aspire 5750 - INTEL i7Core-2630QM, 4 GB Ram and a 500GB HDD is just an external backup, was turned into a Debian 10 "Buster" notebook.
Needless to say I upgraded the BIOS, threw out the 500GB 2,5 S-ATA and replaced it with A Kingston 240GB SSd temporary.
    Memory: Standard 4GB so-dimm DDR3 1333Mhz, have been upgraded to 8GB.
  • ACER Aspire 5750Z - 4883 with an INTEL B960 CPU, 4GB RAM and 320GB HDD (Now OCZ 120GB SSD), was turned into a Debian 10 "Buster" notebook and it works great.
RAM. NOTE: Computer very slow, even after fresh reinstall of Debian, so I turned to Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.3 (based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS) and the computer is much faster.
  • ACER Aspire - INTEL Celeron, 2B RAM, Waiting for the rest of the specificaions, but it was a job where Ubuntu was thrown out and Debian 8 "Jessie" replaced it.

ACER Fingerprint login notebooks uses ELAN TECH Fingerprint sensor on most or all its models (unconfirmed).

So, if yours is one and you are experimenting with changing Windows10 for Debian 10, then libfprint drivers will be of most importance to you.

Fingerprint support "libfprint support", plus you want to look at supported devices list.

For Debian10 "Buster", there is libfprint-dev, version: 0.8.2 available in their repository, while the latest is 1.0 ( source code ) Requires: GLib 2.50.

Fingerprint ERROR Example: (Acer S5-371 Windows10), user with ELAN Tech fingerprint driver problems after Windows update.

Also, running these latest distros, does use memory, so if you are like me multitasking, 4GB sometimes freezes the computer for a few seconds.

Games For Linux

Windows has always been the preferred platform for gaming, but after STEAM's interest in Linux more game developers are making their games natively available for Linux.
