GNU Midnight Commander for Linux ( aka mc ) is one of the top file managers for Linux.

Midnight Commander is a command-line visual (full-screen) file manager that allows users to do basic file management operations, that comes with many kinds of useful features, aside from copy, move, delete, create files and directories, you can change permissions and ownership, review archives, you can use it as an FTP client and much more.

The application can be easily extended with support for extracting CAB, ISO9660, ARJ, RAR, ZIP, ACE, and 7z archives, as well as accessing VFS (Virtual File System) Samba shares, as well as CVS (Concurrent Versions System) services, by installing various packages.

It will reminds you of the windows version "Symantec Norton Commander 5.0", which was my preferred file manager.

How to install from Debian 10 "Buster" repository.

First as "root", add lines to /etc/apt/sources.list:


Press Enter and enter your root password, then Enter again.


nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Press Enter,

Copy the following:

deb http://www.tataranovich.com/debian buster main
deb-src http://www.tataranovich.com/debian buster main

Paste it in /etc/apt/sources.list

Save it by pressing CTRL+X, 'Y' and press Enter.

Now download and install :tataranovich-keyring.

cd Downloads

Press Enter,

Install the keyring:

dpkg -i tataranovich-keyring_2019.07.07_all.deb

Press Enter,

Now update:

apt-get update

Press Enter,

Open a terminal window and install Midnight Commander:

sudo apt-get install mc

Press Enter.

Note: There will not be any icons, it is CLI-based, meaning that when you want to use it.

Open a terminal window and type:


Press Enter, that is it.

F10, will exit.

Build requirements for GNU Midnight Commander:

- glibc
- gcc
- make
- autoconf
- automake
- libtool
- glib2
- pcre (if glib < 2.14)
- slang or ncurses
- gettext
- cvs (for gettext < 0.18 or if gettext >= 0.18 is built with --with-cvs)
- libssh2 >= 1.2.5 is required only for sftp vfs (1.2.7 if you need ssh-agent support)
- libaspell to support spell checking in the internal editor

How to compile the code and install Midnight Commander:

cd downloads

Press Enter,

cd mc-4.8.24

Press Enter,


Press Enter.

By default, `make install' will install the package's files in /usr/local/bin', `/usr/local/man', etc.
