Remove Unused Flatpak Runtimes

Remove unused Flatpak runtimes.

So you have installed Flatpak distributed software, then uninstalled the app and now you want to remove unused Flatpak Runtimes.

Most users are likely to assume that these unused Flatpak Runtimes are automatically removed, but Flatpak doesn't automatically remove a runtime after the last application that it depended on, was uninstalled.

Flatpak applications are depending on runtimes, a set of essential libraries and services. Thanks to these runtimes, creators of applications can bundle the libraries specific to their application without having to worry about low-level dependencies.

Each runtime is used by multiple applications, keeping the applications small in size, but after you uninstall all the application that depends on a particular runtime, the runtime itself is not removed.

This can cause issues, because these runtimes can be very large, thus using more disk space then needed.

Remove unused Flatpak runtimes

Open a terminal window and type the following command:

sudo flatpak uninstall --unused

Press Enter,

This command should list all unused Flatpak runtimes on your system and offer to uninstall them for you.

You will be asked to enter Yes or No, type yes and hit Enter again.

The flatpak uninstall --unused command, removes both system and user runtimes that are no longer needed for your user.

Note:You need Flatpak 0.11.8 released in June,2018 installed and If you are uninstalling for more than one user, you need to add the --user to this command.
