Skype for Debian 8 Jessie

Undefined

Skype is a company as well as the company's most important software. The company is active in the field of Internet-based communication, primarily IP telephony, and was founded in early 2003 by Swedish entrepreneur Niklas Zennström and Danish Janus Friis, who previously became known for the Kazaa file sharing program.

The company was sold to Ebay in 2005, which in 2009 sold it to a group of investors. In 2011, Skype was purchased by Microsoft, which incorporated the program into its Internet communications business.

Learn how to install and uninstall Skype for Linux in Debian 8 Jessie and Debian 9 Stretch.

People never read the license terms, but here's the most interesting!

"Microsoft may access, disclose and preserve your data (including private content such as the content of your instant messages, stored video messages, voice messages, or file transfers) to provide the service or to help your local partner or local operator facilitate your communication to follow legislation or respond to valid legal process, including law enforcement or other authorities. "

Keep in mind that all you write is reading Microsoft and all links you send via Skype will come to visit.

Skype isn't private and is recommended only for quick messages that check your encrypted or non-encrypted mail, for example. Not convinced? Look here.

NOTE! There are some issues with Debian 8 Jessie and Skype.

But to solve them, open the Terminal window and type the following commands:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install libc6:i386 libqt4-dbus:i386 libqt4-network:i386
libqt4-xml:i386 libqtcore4:i386 libqtgui4:i386 libqtwebkit4:i386

wget -O skype-install.deb http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-deb
sudo dpkg -i skype-install.deb

It takes some time to install Skype, but it works.

If you no longer want to use Skype for Linux, you should use the Terminal to uninstall the program completely with the following command:

sudo apt-get autoremove --purge skype
