What Linux commands should I avoid?

Undefined

These commands I list here should "NEVER" use you out, not at home and definitely not at work:

First out is the command that erases everything, and I mean everything.

1. rm -rf /

The core program, rm is very practical. This allows you to remove even the most stubborn files on your system. But you get big issues if you combine rm with these two flags: -r, which forces a recursive removal through all subdirectories.

The flag -f, forcing files with "READ ONLY" rights without confirmation. If you run this command from the root directory, all data comes across your entire device.

NOTE! IF You accidentally manage to run this command (CTRL + C) immediately!

BASH Fork Bomb:

Bash is a command prompt that is part of the GNU project. It is very common in Unix-like operating systems based on free software, such as GNU / Linux and FreeBSD.

2. :(){ :|: & };:

If you run this command, BASH will open new terminal windows until all system resources expire and the system finally crashes.

Writing data to a device:

3. dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda.

This command / dev / zero has real applications. For example, you can use it to clear unused spaces in a partition with zeros. This causes a picture of the partition to be compressed much less for data transfer or archiving.

If you want to overwrite files or fill unused spaces with zeros, use one of the following programs instead:

  • BleachBit
  • Data Removal: Darik's Boot and Nuke - DBAN
  • GCleaner (under development)
  • Stacer
  • Sweeper

Games For Linux

Windows has always been the preferred platform for gaming, but after STEAM's interest in Linux more game developers are making their games natively available for Linux.
