A poplular software for converting mp4 to m4v, mkv and other fileformats.
HandBrake is a free and open-source transcoder for digital video files, originally developed in 2003 by Eric Petit (a.k.a. "titer" from his SVN repository username) to make ripping a film from a DVD to a data storage device easier. Since then, it has undergone many changes and revisions.
This excellent piece of software can easily convert media and even add subtitles to movies. While most of the software is self explainatory.
Handbrake supports .iso, .mkv, .mp4, .avi among other formats.
HandBrake is also available for macOS and Windows.
It uses third-party libraries such as FFmpeg, libvpx, x264 and x265.
How to install via a terminal window:
sudo apt-get install handbrake
Press Enter.
Now you have the latest version of Handbrake installed.
Open, the .iso with Open Source button.
Next, leave Video as it is 2.2 and then go to Subtitles.
Click add, like in the screenshot. You can add all or just one subtitle, however choose one default.
Then click OK.
Now all you need to do is click START and wait for it to complete.
If you need to extract the subtitle for translation purposes, see our FAQ.
Note: The Flatpak version available in LMDE5 Software Manager couldn' t install, so I went with the older version in Debian 11 repository. Both the developers behind Handbrake could leave installation notes from source, the same goes for Flatpak developers.
Windows has always been the preferred platform for gaming, but after STEAM's interest in Linux more game developers are making their games natively available for Linux.
